Are you and your children taking on the Summer Reading Challenge this year? If you are we can help. We have put together a list of books recommended for our incredible little troopers.
Louise, founder of our charity says, “lots of schools and libraries run summer reading challenges. However, we know that it can be hard to find books that military children can relate to. We have put together a recommended reads list to help you find books that talk about being part of a military family and celebrate our little troopers.”
Our Recommended Reads web page features 25 books centred around different aspects of military life. You can read a summary of the book and find out where to order them.
The Recommended Reads lists includes our very own set of books. There are two series of Little Troopers books. All six books were written with the aim to reflect military children’s lives and to encourage them to talk about their own experiences:
- Our Dear Daddy and Dear Mummy books tell the story through letters. Tom, Tilly and Freddie write to their serving military parents about their thoughts and feelings.
- In ‘My Navy Life’, My RAF Life’ and ‘My Army Life’ the story is told through children’s diary entries. The books explore the highs and lows of having a parent serving away from home.
This year we have added a new book for pre-school children called, ‘I’m a little trooper.’
Let’s make it a Fundraising Challenge too!
If you are taking on a reading challenge, why not turn it into a fundraising Read-a-Thon? You can choose whether to build a book tower, read so many books a week or run a Storytime session with friends. You and your little troopers could raise money to help others just like them.
Louise adds, “I hope you find our reading list helpful. If you have a library or school near you base, please share our Recommended Reads lists with them.”
