It’s been an action-packed Month of the Military Child and it’s been lovely to see you at our face-to-face events. Over the month we’ve met lots of little troopers online, at the Royal Hospital Chelsea and our Tidworth Family Day!
Louise, founder of our charity said, “Our small team spend months planning our Month of the Military Child activities. One of the most special things about it, is that we get to meet lots of you in person. I started this charity because my little girl was struggling during her dad’s deployment. That little girl is now an adult and a fully qualified nurse, so it’s lovely to meet lots of the little troopers who drive our passion to continue our important work every day!
Tidworth Family Fun Day
Over 300 people came to our 10k and Family Fun Day event in Tidworth. 100 runners set-off from the Tidworth Oval to complete a multi-terrain, closed road race through the beautiful Wiltshire countryside. 200 people of all ages, from 18 months through to 15-years, also took part in a 1K fun run around the track.
Together they raised nearly £4,000 to help us continue our work. In addition to the running and toddling, there were also lots of lots of fun family activities. On the day children could learn circus skills, create some crafts, get their face painted and choose a balloon model.
The Tidworth 10K and family fun run was organised by Andali Events and RUK Systems.
The Royal Hospital Chelsea
During the Easter Holidays we got to accompany a group of children and their parents to another fabulous day at The Royal Hospital Chelsea. The event was arranged to celebrate the Month of the Military Child. The children and pensioners shared stories, toured the Hospital grounds and made some fabulous tricorne hats along with a giant dandelion painting.
Simba, who attended with his mum Clara, said “It was an experience I never thought I would have. The day was really fun and I loved how the Chelsea Pensioners had some good jokes. I made good friends with Maggy and Brendan and liked how some Chelsea Pensioners were waiting outside when we arrived. It was good to chat to the Pensioners and I think it was the highlight of the holidays and one of the best things you can do in London. I loved how Maggy made a magnet for us to take home and I loved having a trail and a tour at the same time. They showed us a tricorne hat and I got a picture with it on next to Maggy. I hope I get to see them again in the future.”
Simba told his school friends all about his visit in a special assembly on his return to school. This intergenerational partnership is so special to our charity and both the Pensioners and the children get so much from the day.
Online workshops
Earlier in the month lots of little troopers joined us for an exciting online Science workshop. In just one hour they got to take part in various kitchen chemistry experiments – creating lots of oohs and aahs!
There is still time to join one of our online workshops. We have a special online baking session this Saturday (26th April). During the session with Cook Stars your little ones will be guided through making some yummy hedgehog shaped bread rolls! Ingredients list and online access link will be emailed prior to the session. Sign up for the session here.
