Our first ever Little Trooper of the Month’s Mum takes on half marathon in memory of her son.

Sam Williams, our first ever Little Trooper of the Month’s Mum will be running the Royal Parks Half Marathon in memory of her son Alfie. In 2014, Sam’s son, Alfie, was named the charity’s very first “Little Trooper of the Month” after being diagnosed with cancer. Tragically, Alfie passed away from the illness in 2015.

Earlier this year, his mum Sam got back in touch with us to let us know that she was taking on a half marathon in Alfie’s memory and had chosen to raise funds for our charity.

Sam told us: “In 2015 we lost Alfie. Every run I’ve done since has been for him – he is the whole reason I started.”

Overcoming the odds

Sam’s journey to the start line has been filled with significant physical setbacks: 2.5 years ago, she had major surgery, which meant absolutely no running, lifting or anything else for over 12 weeks. Then last November, she slipped at the 6k mark in a race and ended up with a grade 2 sprain. This meant another seven weeks of no running.

Sam added, “The ankle still isn’t 100%, but I’m good to run and have been cleared by physio. So far, training is going really well. School holidays can be an issue sometimes. Luckily, I have a treadmill and my youngest will sometimes come along on his bike or scooter when I run. It’s been a battle but I’m back. This year I have decided to fundraise for Little Troopers, a fantastic charity.”

Louise our Charity founder said, “We’re so touched that Sam has chosen to support Little Troopers in Alfie’s memory, all these years after he was our very first Little Trooper of the Month.”
