Resources for Military Children with Additional Needs
The Little Troopers at School project aims to help primary and secondary schools understand the unique needs and experiences of military children. Our goal is to make practical, accessible resources available to all education settings supporting service families.
Below, you’ll find a range of specialist resources created for schools and for parents of children with additional needs all written with the military community and its unique challenges in mind.
These include Social Stories, Talking Mats, and a Military Life Dictionary sheet, each designed to help children express themselves, build understanding, and feel supported both at home and in school.
Talking Mats
‘Talking Mats’ are a communication framework for helping children with additional needs organise their thoughts and express their views about particular issues. They allow visual representation of these thoughts and views. We have created some for military situations.
Social Stories
Social Stories: Short, simple descriptions of some military social situations developed as a tool to help individuals to better understand the situation and what is to be expected of them.
Dictionary Sheets
Using ‘dictionary sheets’ to help with word learning.
