In 2018, we launched the Little Troopers at School programme, born from my own lived experience as a military parent. My daughter attended nine schools over the years, and each one approached pastoral care for military children so differently. Out of all those schools, I believe only one truly got it right. There was no consistency, no framework for best practice, and no recognition that these children face challenges that others simply do not.
Since then, the programme has been embraced by thousands of schools and professionals. The resources we’ve created have had a real impact and yet, we knew there was still a gap.
Why We Need a National Framework
Through conversations with schools, families, and educators, one truth became clear: there was no national framework for military children’s clubs. Some schools had a version of a club, others had nothing at all. The result? Inconsistent provision, and children left without the safe space they deserve.
I felt strongly that every school should have access to a clear, accessible structure to create clubs where military children can come together, be that weekly, monthly, or termly. A place where they are understood, where their unique experiences are recognised, and where they can simply belong.
Because we know that community is one of the strongest predictors of resilience. For military children, that sense of belonging isn’t just comforting, it’s essential.
The Little Troopers Club
The Little Troopers Club, an initiative within our Little Troopers at School programme is our answer to this need. It’s not about a few fun activities here and there, it’s about continuity. Whether a child is in Dorset, Essex, Yorkshire, or Cornwall, the club will be there as a thread of connection that doesn’t break with relocation.
From October 2025, schools across the UK and overseas MOD schools, will be able to join this national initiative. We’re providing session plans, resources, and physical starter packs to make it as simple as possible to get going. All it takes is a little time, some passion, and a belief in the difference you can make.
One school who piloted a club told us:
“We don’t always talk about military life, but if there is something on their mind, the Little Troopers Club is a place they can share their worries, either with the group or just with me. When someone is due to move school, the children share their own experiences and help their friend feel more confident about the move.”
That’s the kind of impact we want every military child to experience.
A Vision for the Future
This is more than a club. It’s a lifeline of belonging.
My vision is that one day, no child from a military family will feel invisible. With the Little Troopers Clubs, we are one step closer to making that vision real and I couldn’t be prouder to share this journey with you.
I can’t wait to reveal more in the coming weeks. Together, we can make sure every little trooper knows: you belong.
This initiative has only been made possible through the generosity and belief of our funders. Many organisations have come together collaboratively to support our vision, and we are deeply grateful. A huge thank you to Tesco Stronger Starts, The Army Benevolent Fund, BFBS Big Salute, and The Grocers’ Charity for standing with us. Together, we are bringing the Little Troopers Club to life.
