"My Mummy's in the RAF" is a children's book written and illustrated by Claire Dunbar to help support children who have a mother serving in the Royal Air Force. The book is inspired by her own family; her husband who is based and lives part-week in RAF Boulmer, and their two children aged 9 and 4 who live in Dundee, Scotland. The youngest especially struggles when their father works away each week. He has also been on 3 long deployments to the Falkland Islands, so they are very well experienced at learning to cope when living apart.
She wanted to create a book that would help children deal with their mother being away. It explores the types of jobs she may have, what her room looks like when she is away, and the things you can do to help time go quicker. It also touches on the emotions and experiences faced when a mother is in the RAF.
By sharing this book, she wanted to help other children who have a serving mother in the RAF.
